Pilates 101: The History of Pilates and the Benefits of a Pilates Practice

Why Pilates? When people ask why should they do Pilates, there isn’t a one size fits all answer. Every person is different, which means every body has different needs. Pilates is so much more than “ lengthening and strengthening.”

A Brief Pilates History

Pilates was first created as a form of rehabilitation during World War I. The practice began on bedridden patients. The dance world took to the exercise form, which it is more commonly known to. Professional dancers such as George Balanchine brought the Pilates practice to their dance companies. Dancers all over the world currently practice Pilates as part of their dance training.

The Many Benefits of Pilates

There are a million and one reasons why Pilates is beneficial for everyone. For the athlete recovering from a torn ACL, Pilates is a wonderful low-impact form of rehab. Instead of just helping the injury, we work on preventing future injuries and coming back stronger.

For the pregnant mom-to-be, we work on healthy core connections and breathing techniques. We get the whole body ready for labor and continue to support the postpartum body beyond the third trimester.

Whether rehabilitating an injury, sports conditioning, strengthening the prenatal or postnatal body, or simply ready to incorporate a new type of movement into your wellness routine, Pilates is accessible to all!
